March '09 Mix/Requiem

Hey everyone.  My March disc is going in the mail tomorrow (Wednesday).  It's really two separate albums.  The first half is another mix of what I've liked lately (that was not from the group).  Quite a few covers ended up on the disc (by  M.Ward, Beck, Sublime, and AC Newman), along with tracks by The National, Beirut, and Brett Dennen (thanks to Laurie and Sean for the introduction to those artists).  A track from an album released today made it to the disc (from a well known Canadian band).  The mix ended up being pretty mellow save for a few obvious exceptions.   The second half includes selections from my favorite Requiem masses by Verdi, Brahms, Mozart, and Faure.  I hope people give it at least one listen.  You should  crank the volume for the first selection, which should appeal to fans of heavy music in general.  The rest is pretty melodic, especially the Verdi "Hostias" and the Faure "Pie Jesu".

Looking forward to the disc Mike, especially the follow-up tracks from the National and Beirut. I will also keep it handy in case I attend any funerals in the near future. Glad you liked the tunes. I'm also a big fan of the latest Offspring album - their best in a while. I also hope everyone checks out more Stars tunes, 'cause they're definitely one of the most underrecognized local bands at the moment.

Wow, I can't wait for this one!!! Love the artwork too. Only a real music fiend would realize the link between heavy classical compositions and heavy metal......Media tip of the month....check out the Interview with Lemmy in this months Spin Magazine...some of the best rock history quotes that I can remember in a long time. Definitely beats the U2 interview in the same issue. Read them both though to get the true sense of the disparity in "success" the respective artists have enjoyed from their work over the years. For once in my life I feel kind of bad for.........??

Back from a week in the tropics and now must go to bed to rest and prepare for the horror that awaits me at work tomorrow.

Am glad your disc is in the mail, Mike. (Mine is done and in the packaging process.) It looks intriguing and I will definately give it ALL a good listen. Your cover art is super. Am guessing the "new" album track you are referring to is The Hip..looking forward to their Mtl show next month. They are playing at a relatively (~3000)small venue so it should be a great show.

Hey Henry...Hope you like my Beirut and The National selection as much as Laurie's. I know the requiem is all about funerals, but it gave an excuse for major composers to write heavy choral pieces, which I tend to like. Heavy metal fans should also be used to religious themes (as Kent pointed out). So, you are right about The Hip. I wouldn't have thought to put them on a disc like this, but I heard the track on CFNY's "Hip Weekend" on Sunday, and really liked it. I think it will be a big single for them in a few months.
